About
I'm glad you're here to be a part of my journey and I hope to be even just a small part of yours.
I got into polymer clay jewelry when a friend of my sister's was selling some earrings for a good cause. I was really happy to be able to contribute to the cause and once I got the earrings, I was equally fascinated and interested on how she made them. I asked my sister if she could find out how her friend had made the earrings and what materials she used. That very night, I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, crazy in a frenzy of excitement to try and make earrings from what I had learned was polymer clay.
I figured that I would just make some earrings as a hobby, as I am forever habitually picking up hobbies. Similar to my other hobbies, I was extremely interested to learn the technique of working with polymer clay, but different from any of my other hobbies, there was something about polymer clay that kept me coming back to it, over and over again. I learned over time that working with polymer clay is a long and meticulous process with so many different aspects and endless possibilities; I was hooked.
Having discovered polymer clay during the early stages of COVID-19 and in between my 3rd and final year of college, I never expected that my small interest would transform into a passion. In my last year as an undergraduate, I went through a lot of obstacles and the big kahuna being what was I going to do with my life? Within those struggles, I was becoming more and more obsessed with polymer clay and one night as I was staring into my phone at 3am, a small seed of an idea grew within me. I thought, I could start my own small business selling polymer clay jewelry. Now at 3am in the morning, this idea felt inspired and I felt like fireworks were flying off inside me. Once I woke up, however, I felt like I wanted to keep this idea all to myself and was scared of sharing it with anyone else. Lo and behold, being a human with a relationship with other, I inevitably began to share my idea with others. Let's just say that some were extremely supportive, and some others were well...extremely not.
What can I say though, the heart wants what it wants, and here I am today. Through many tears and hardships, I have fought through a lot of confusion and doubt to be here. I have my family, my tribe in every sense of the word and beyond, and my beautifully encouraging friends to thank for their support despite the impossibility of this reality. I'm not in the most ideal stage of life nor am I opening Your Pet Rock under ideal circumstances, but I am so excited to be here. So, I hope that you're here to be a part of my journey, but boy am I excited to be even just a small part of yours.
Love,
Your Pet Rock ♥
P.S. Some of you might be really confused at what the heck the store name means. It didn't take me very long to come up with it and my younger sister mostly made the logo. It's hard for me to explain my exact intention behind the name but basically, my name is Petra.I know it sounds narcissistic to name a shop after myself but bear with me here. My dad named me after the apostle Peter, but the female version, which is Petra. Peter, or Petra, literally translates to 'rock' and in the Bible, Peter is referred to as the foundation of the church. Now, like my namesake, I have been told many times that I have a strong foundation to my person, but I have also been told that I have been a rock and foundation for people in their lives. I don't know about you, but that is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, and touching compliments that I have ever received. Moving on (I hope you're still with me), in high school my nickname was 'Pet'. I always found that endearing and whenever someone calls me that, I feel close to them. Now putting it all together, I built this store name so that I feel like a person that you can be close to and also in hopes of encouraging you to be a rock to yourself and to the people that you love. I hope that this business and all of the things it entails can be an encouragement to you, from you, or to you, from others for the rock that you are. So, Rock On because your Pet is Rock-ing you on!
